A dancer needs photographs for an arangetram invitation, a sabha application or an academy brochure, and the pictures they have are phone shots from the wings of a stage. The costume is there, but the hands are blurred, the eyes are lost in the dark and the line of the pose is cut off by the frame. If you're looking for a classical dance portfolio shoot in Bangalore, this is the problem a studio session solves. Nearby Studio in Rajajinagar runs Bharatanatyam and Navarasa portfolio shoots with room to move, lighting that freezes a pose cleanly and a dressing room for costume changes.

Why a dance portfolio shoot is different from a regular model shoot

A fashion portfolio asks a model to look good in a garment. A dance portfolio asks for much more.

The hands matter. A hasta or mudra has to be crisp and clearly shaped, which means the focus and the lighting have to be right on the fingers as well as the face. The eyes matter, because in Bharatanatyam they carry the emotion of the pose. And the full line of the body matters: the araimandi, the extended arm, the turn of the head. Crop any of it and the pose loses its meaning.

That's why dancers are often disappointed by photos from a general photographer who has never shot classical dance. The pose is held for a second, the photographer isn't sure which moment to catch, and the costume details that took hours to prepare don't show.

What a Bharatanatyam shoot looks like in the studio

A shoot starts with a conversation about what the photos are for. An arangetram invitation needs a few strong, formal poses. A portfolio for sabha applications needs a range of postures and expressions. An academy brochure might need group-friendly, clean images with space for text.

From there, the session usually moves in three parts:

Static poses. The dancer holds classical poses while the photographer works on framing and light. These are the images that go on invitations and profiles, so they get the most care.

Movement. Jumps, turns and transitions are shot with strobes, which freeze motion sharply so the costume and the lines stay clear. A dancer needs space for this. Nearby Studio's production floor is about 500 sq ft, which gives room for full extension without hitting a wall.

Expressions and close-ups. Tighter frames capture the face, the eyes and the hands, which is where a dancer's training shows most clearly.

The Navarasa series

Navarasa means the nine rasas, or emotions, of classical Indian performance: shringara (love), hasya (laughter), karuna (compassion), raudra (anger), veera (heroism), bhayanaka (fear), bibhatsa (disgust), adbhuta (wonder) and shanta (peace).

A Navarasa shoot photographs one dancer expressing each of the nine emotions, usually with a consistent backdrop and lighting so the set reads as a series. Dancers use these as signature portfolio pieces, as wall art for a school or as material for performance promotion. Because the face does all the work, the lighting is soft and even, with enough definition to show the eyes and the smallest change in expression.

If you'd like a Navarasa series, plan it in advance. Decide which rasas you want to shoot, rehearse the expression for each one and bring reference photos if you have them, so the session isn't spent searching for the look.

Costume, makeup and quick changes

Classical costume is detailed, and getting it ready is half the work. The studio has a makeup room and a dressing room, so you can prepare, change and touch up on site between looks without rushing to a car or a restroom.

Plan your looks before the day. Bring every costume, the jewellery, the hair accessories and the footwear. If you plan to wear more than one costume, pack them in the order you want to shoot. The half-day package covers up to two costumes and the full-day package up to four.

How to prepare for your shoot

  • Decide the purpose. An invitation, a portfolio and a brochure each need different poses and crops.
  • Make a shot list with your teacher. Your guru knows which poses show your strengths best, so ask them what the portfolio should include.
  • Practise the poses in the costume. Some poses look different when the costume is on, and it helps to know which ones work.
  • Bring references. Photos you like help the photographer understand the look you want faster than a long description.
  • Plan your makeup. Stage makeup photographs differently from everyday makeup, so confirm the look before the day.
  • Eat and rest well. A long session with multiple looks is tiring, and it shows on camera.
